Sustainable Tourism

The goal of the tourism component would be to develop international standard eco-tourism facilities and activities. Benefits would be twofold: firstly, creating additional tourist attractions and activities, thereby increasing resort traffic and revenue; and secondly, providing income-generating opportunities for natural resource-dependent families in the area, reducing the need to over-exploit the natural resource base.

Specific objectives of the project may include: developing a range of sustainable employment opportunities for local people; developing a clear link between tourism development and the benefits of conservation through eco-tourism; providing revenues for conservation activities; developing an international standard of nature interpretation infrastructure and services; raising awareness of threats to nature conservation and solutions to those threats amongst local people, visitors and the general public; and creating a successful model that can be used elsewhere in Nigeria to help achieve conservation goals through appropriate tourism development.
